Priming the Pump: Empowering Communities for Sustainable Development

It is obvious that on each of these islands there exists potential for social development, economic growth and sustainable development, of which the provision of energy will serve as a catalyst. However, to accelerate this process to get the desired impact will require not only the provision of reliable energy supply.

From the initial observations a few things stand out, the first is that in order for the project to inject rapid change in the communities, there will be a need to "prime the pump" veritably we will need to teach the island dwellers figuratively "how to fish". Least the benefits of the energy become restricted to television watching, cold beer drinking, etc. with less income generation opportunities and social upliftment.

Support programs such as entrepreneurial training, customer care training, basic bookkeeping, set-up and run cottage industries, innovative agricultural practices i.e. climate smart agricultural system, dynamic agroforestry, hydroponics, ecotourism, the availability of soft business loans for indigenes, coaching, mentoring. Are some of the direct supports that can be given while indirectly the active promotion of the islands to prospective investors can buttress this support.

The second thing that stands out is that the church is a potential partner in all these communities. Currently with churches on almost all islands the church whereas the state is desultory at best. They are prospective development partners that need to be engaged.
